FAQs

What are the advantages of our setting out services?

Setting out removes the uncertainty and downtime brought on by inaccurate measurements made by unskilled site workers. We make sure structures are fit and aligned within the tolerances of their design. Additionally, our markers are semi-permanent (galvanised steel nails) when durability for longer periods is required.

What details have to be provided in order to enable setting out?

If the site is an ongoing project, all we really need is coordinated DWG format plans for the work that is being done and survey control points.

For a new project without prior attendance, a topographical survey and the designers’ setting out plans in DWG format are required.

Can the setting out be done when only PDF drawings are available?

Our last resort to enable the setting out, would be use of software to convert PDF drawings into DWG format. This process hides some risks, so additional care is taken to avoid fouls.

What if the project's topographical survey is not done?

If a topographical survey was not done before the project was designed, there are often two possibilities.

To correctly position the proposed structure within planned distances from boundaries, a best fit survey is carried out to establish existing features’ locations and distances apart. This way, we can verify that planning or design requirements are met.

The accuracy of best fit surveys is not compromised, but they may draw attention to any problems that arise when designs are commissioned without first surveying the developed area since boundaries may be crossed.

What is the price of our setting out?

We aim to provide the best service at the best price. Day rates will depend on various elements, including location and whether a two-person team (an engineer and an assistant) is needed.

In every instance, we provide our own fully calibrated robotic total stations. With the use of robotic total stations, the bulk of activities may be accomplished by a setting out engineer alone, saving on the cost of an assistant.

The cost will also depend on the nature of the operation; for instance, spraying up lengthy gridlines on floors may require extra charge for spraying consumables. In addition, we have discounts for frequent visits or long-term full-time attendance.

Which areas do you cover?

We work primarily in and around London, but we will travel depending on the projects. Sometimes additional travel charges might be applied. Scanning is done nationally.

How many visits will I require?

Your project will determine that, and frequently the quantity of visits will vary depending on the site conditions and skills of the site operatives. For example, if the floor is busy with construction materials, this will prolong the visit as the engineer might have to wait for the area to be cleared. Another example is when some site operatives could work off a few markings. This could significantly decrease the time and frequency of our visits.

A general framework can be discussed and decided upon request.

What kinds of projects do you do?

We work on residential new build and refurbishment projects, school extensions and renovations, new build offices and office building refurbishment/change of use projects and, in addition, we do bigger civil engineering and road projects. In essence, we do pretty much any kind of setting out and survey. We have an extensive amount of competence and experience.
